Astra 1D - Where's NBC Super Channel ?
Before the new Astra 1D was launched SES were keen to remind viewers that they
shouldn't buy any new equipment or upgrade their existing set ups until they
are sure of the new services transmitting. It seems that SES, in their
enthusiasm, announced NBC Super Channel were launching on January 1st, before
NBC actually signed for the transponder !
Despite the issuing of an Astra press release just before Christmas, NBC say
that they have not yet signed the contract with Astra. This is the reason that
Super is not broadcasting via Astra yet. TS News understands that there are
still several small issues that need to be clarified before NBC sign on the
dotted line. The channel are close to signing though and the service is still
expected to begin within the next two weeks.
Teleclub on Astra 1D
Peter Klanowski, TS Bureau North Germany
Teleclub has moved to a new home on Astra 1D transponder 55. Taking it's place
on Astra 1A, tranponder 9, is German station Kabel 1. Kabel 1 was previously
available in encrypted D2-Mac on Eutlesat 2 F1. The Swiss radio stations have
remaned on Astra 1A after a deal was arranged with Kabel 1. Swiss radio was
anxious to keep the radios on the older satellite because they have not yet
upgraded all their receiving stations to be Astra 1D compatible.
New Slovak channel begins this week
Sharon Fisher, OMRI, Inc.
On 16 January, a new private Slovak television station, Danubius Cable TV
(DCTV), will begin broadcasts on cable and satellite TV. Regular programming
is expected to start on 14 February. The station will broadcast to Slovakia
and the Czech Republic through cable and a total of 60 countries through
satellite, TASR reported on 10 January.
DCTV will be the first private Slovak station with the ability to reach a wide
audience.

Space Systems/Loral plans to use one of five Russian Proton launches to orbit
the first DBS satellite for Tempo DBS. The first FS 1300 is to leave the
launch pad in the spring of 1996. If all goes according to plan, it will be
followed by a second satellite in the fall. The second bird will ride on a
Martin Marietta Atlas rocket. Tempo is a subsidiary of TCI and PrimeStar
Partners intends to use the satellites to move into the true high-powered DBS
world. This will allow PrimeStar to provide service with an 18 inch antenna.
Russian TV balmed for Chechen Crisis
Julia Wishnevsky, OMRI, Inc
At a news conference on 10 January, Russian Television Chairman Oleg Poptsov
said opposing factions within the Russian government are constantly trying to
make RTV a propaganda organ. He added that the company would not give up its
fight for unbiased reporting. Poptsov fell out of favor with Yeltsin because
of the coverage of the Chechen crisis on RTV newscasts. Later on 10 January,
Egorov, in a prime-time interview with Ostankino TV's "Vremya," said state
television should not be allowed to allocate so much air time to opponents of
the Russian intervention in Chechnya. Shortly after, Sergei Filatov, the head
of Yeltsin's administration, said on Ostankino TV that "the Chechen
developments demonstrate that the Russian state has no state media" and that
measures should be taken to improve the situation. He suggested that Ostankino
and RTV be merged into abody similar to the State Television and Radio
Company--the former Soviet propaganda behemoth. The idea of merging the two
companies was proposed by Yeltsin in November but quickly dropped amid a flood
of protests.
Univision maintains analogue service
TS News London and Satellite Dealers Association
We reported last week that the Univision network were switching all of their
analogue feeds onto MPEG digital feeds. This week we are pleased to announce
that the network has recognised dish owners and plans to continue transmitting
in analogue, albeit on a pay TV basis.
Univision evidentially realized that there was a significant market for their
channel and now plan to provide it in the Videocipher RS format. It can
currently be seen in the clear on Spacenet 3 Channel 5. It is being offered
to the direct-to-home market for $107 dollars per year or $9.95 per month
through Superstar Satellite Entertainment.
The Univision Network provides Univision and Galavision to 20 affiliated
broadcast stations, more than 1,000 cable systems and 320 Galavision
affiliates throughout the U.S. They uplink their digital signal to Galaxy 1R
from Miami. It is carried on Transponder 2. Univision indicated that they
may consider offering Galavision in the future as well.
Transponder shortage !
Satellite Dealers Association
For the 100 or so new programming services that are planning to launch over
the next few years, there is a new problem; the lack of C-Band satellite
space. C-Band has gone from a transponder glut a few years ago to a
transponder famine. In fact, the glut is partially blamed for the famine.
Operators responded to the surplus of transponders by choosing not to replace
some satellites. Another cause, according to Walter Morgan of the
Communications Center, is that "People got spooked by compression and
overreacted. They thought it would shrink the market more than it did."
A survey conducted by Arianespace concluded that while the technology is there
for digital compression to increase effective bandwidth <quote> "a battle is
looming over compression standards."<end of quote>
SpaceConnection's president Bob Patterson stated,"C-Band will continue to be
in great demand for the rest of the decade. The lack of capacity now
indicates just how much demand there is."

arcon Titan 199
Germany`s sky vision GmbH will introduce its new "Titan" in spring. Like all
their other receivers, the Titan 199 is also made in Germany and it will only
be available through authorized trade outlets. With 199 channels, three
Scarts, Philips-Sound and 22 kHz switching the new model`s number of features
is quite close to the Titan 228. An interface for a quick-programing unit is
provided and also four switching modes for he IF line, which allows multifeed
reception with eight single or four double LNBs. The receiver is not only
available in classic black, but also in green, red and silver. With a customer
card, an additional service guarantee is offered during the usual period. If
the customer decides to purchase a "199" aerial for his receiver, this is also
included in the card`s extended guarantee.
Personal Computers CATV Systems Design
Not hours, but only minutes will be spent with designing CATV now. That is, if
the technician uses "Network-Designer", a WINDOWS 3.X application from Swiss
manufacturer Tonatronic Antennenbau. It runs on any system with a 386
processor or higher, 4 MB of RAM and 3MB harddisk space. After entering the
net topology and hardware restrictions, the program chooses the electronic
componentes and calculates the sockets` level and de-emphasis parameters. The
software not only handles standard components, but also the parameters of any
amplifier you might use.
